Peter Gibbson hates his job as programmer and his greedy boss Bill Lumbergh. His girlfriend is cheating on him and his friends, also working for Lumbergh, aren´t happy with their lives either.
His cheating girlfriend convinces Bill to go to a therapist since he wasn´t happy for a long time. But while Dr. Swanson got him in hypnosis the hypnotherapist dies. Bill stays in a state of ecstasy which wasn´t ended by Dr. Swanson and changes his whole live.
